In this interactive course, which can be used on its own or as a companion to the book Grading for Equity, we will critically examine our traditional approach to grading, establish a vision for grading that is accurate, bias-resistant, and motivational, and learn about the practices that make our grading more equitable. This course also offers interactive opportunities with one of our Crescendo Education Group coaches, who will provide individualized feedback to assignments to help you transform your grading practices. 

Included in the course are videos and downloadable articles and resources, as well as opportunities to connect and share practices and experiences with others enrolled in the course.

Joe Feldman

Author

Joe Feldman is the CEO of Crescendo Education Group (crescendoedgroup.org), a consulting organization that partners with schools, districts, and post-secondary institutions to help faculty use improved and more equitable grading and assessment practices. Joe is the author of several articles on grading, assessment, and equity, and the author of Grading for Equity: What It Is, Why it Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms (Corwin). He leads workshops and presentations throughout the country to support teachers and education leaders with equitable grading. Prior to founding Crescendo Ed Group, Joe has worked in education at the local and national levels for over twenty years in both charter and district school contexts, and as a teacher, principal, and district administrator. He began his career as a high school English and American history teacher in Atlanta Public Schools and was the founding principal of a charter high school in Washington, DC. He has been the Director of Charter Schools for New York City Department of Education, the Director of K–12 Instruction in Union City, California, and was a Fellow to the Chief of Staff for U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley. Joe earned his B.A. from Stanford University and a Master’s degree in Teaching and Curriculum from the Harvard School of Education. He lives in Oakland with his wife and two children.

  • When does the course start and finish?

    The course is open now until the end of the term (see above dates). The course is completely self-paced and you have until the course end date to finish.

  • Why are there different options/plans?

    We know that people have different context and needs, so we want to tailor our courses to fit those needs. There are currently 2 options: 1) Access to online content and a discounted copy of Grading for Equity; 2) Online course, individualized feedback/support from Crescendo Ed Group, a copy of Grading for Equity, and a certificate of completion Choose the one that is the best fit for you!

  • What are the requirements?

    You just have to be willing to critically examine traditional grading, and be dedicated to creating more equitable classrooms and schools!

  • Do you accept Purchase Orders?

    Yes! If you need a purchase order, please email [email protected] to get started. We will generate a quote for the course of your choice, the quantity of participants, and send a copy of our W9 for your accounting team. We will not enroll individuals in the course until we have received the Purchase Order.

  • Do you offer bulk enrollment?

  • How many hours does this course qualify for Professional Development?

    We do not offer credits per se but our interactive course typically qualifies for 15 hours of professional development. It is your responsibility to register for credits with your institution for PD hours. We hope to offer credentials soon!
